FXPHD - MAR202 - Hard Surface and Creature Texturing

Learn real-world workflows for both mechanical and organic assets

Texturing a hard surface model and a creature asset each comes with its own unique technical and artistic challenges. This course is designed to equip you with the skills to tackle both in a way that mirrors real production environments.

You’ll start with a robot model, using Substance Painter to generate utility maps before setting up a clean, modular node graph in Mari. You’ll then move through base texture creation, realism break-up passes, and final exports—finishing with a quick render pass in Maya and Arnold to validate your work.

The second half of the course dives into a creature workflow, where you’ll explore advanced skin texturing, subsurface scattering maps, cavity map usage, and multi-region material setups. From claws to eyes, the course walks through creating believable, flexible textures that hold up under scrutiny.
